Boys tennis squeezes past Sacred Heart 4-3

The boys’ varsity tennis team defeated Sacred Heart Prep in a tight 4-3 match at home today.

With a quick win by number one singles player Nicky Hu (’12) 6-0, 6-1, the Vikings were off to a solid start. Paly was able to increase their lead with a win from number three singles player Austin Leung (’14) 6-2, 6-2.

However, the Gators tied up the match by defeating singles players Dar Shavit (’12) and Blake Smith (’14) 6-7, 4-6 and 5-7, 3-6 respectively.

With each team winning another match, the score was even at 3-3. It came down to the number one doubles match with Mason Haverstock (’13) and Justin Wang (’12) competing for the Vikings.  Despite losing the first set 3-6, Haverstock/Wang were able to maintain their focus in order to triumph over the Gator’s doubles team 6-2, 6-3 in the following sets.

Wang was pleased with his team’s performance today but believes that there is still room for improvement before the end of the season.

“We hope to do better in the next two matches and to beat Gunn,” Wang said. “We really want to make CCS this year.”

The Vikings now 4-6 overall, will play rival Gunn this Thursday at Cubberly at 3:30.
