Palo Alto High School’s boys’ tennis team squeaked by Lynbrook 4-3, today at home.

With some tough singles match-ups, the team looked to the doubles players to secure wins. The Vikings were able to sweep the doubles with victories from Mason Haverstock (’13) and Mikael Lassooy (’13) at number one, Adi Mahadevan (’14) and Jack Paladin (’14) at number two and Kevin Huang (’15) and Gabriel Mechali at number three.

On court one, top singles player Austin Leung (’14) faced strong competition, falling 6-4, 6-3. Blake Smith (’14) and George He (’14) at number two and three singles respectively, suffered similar fates. With the score tied at three matches each, the Vikes looked to Ronack Baldua (’16), a new addition to the team, to take the win.

The freshman, clinched the match, for the team’s first league win, 7-5 6-2.

“[This year is] looking pretty good, we lost a star player in Nicky Hu, who now plays for Harvard,” Leung said, “but we got a lot of new players to fill the void. And so far, our team has played well. We almost beat Los Altos, one of the top teams in the league.”

The Vikings, now 1-1 in league, will face off against Carlmont at 3:30 on Wednesday at home.
